Daessiksin 大食神 - Authentic Korean BBQ

15:34

I had a MAJOR craving for Korean bbq that day.

I miss Korean bulgolgi, I miss their kimchi, I miss their chilli bean paste...

Alright then, this means a trip to Daessiksin - Korean BBQ Buffet @ Nex.

It is located within the Ministry of Food (but it is NOT under MOF, so Citizens don't get discounts apparently.)

Digression/rant alert: I was very displeased by MOF's misleading advertising email that encouraged me to patronise Daessiksin (for it was grouped together with this whole list of brands that were supposedly under MOF), but then when I arrived at Daessiksin, the manager said they were unaffiliated with MOF, so my MOF Citizen card was of absolutely no use. WTS? Why are they even mentioned in MOF's email if they were totally unrelated businesses? This makes no effing sense. Was MOF trying to inflate the number of brands under their umbrella to give the false idea that they are a larger corporation than what they actually are?  >: ( URGH TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE BLUNDER.

The manager was pretty friendly though, and personally led us to our tables.

The funnel ensured that we don't stink of bbq after our meal and the non-stick pan-grill thingamajig was rather convenient for us too! At least we don't have to constantly scrape charred meaty bits off the pan like in Seoul Garden.

The drinks station with the usual limited variety.

The cooked food station with Korean glass noodles (loved the sesame taste), fried lotus (reminded me of potato chips), kimchi pancakes, chicken wings, fried brinjal, and ddeokbokki. Most of the food was cold at this station, so it wasn't exactly very appetising. That explains why I had so little of the kimchi pancake (and normally I absolutely love kimchi pancakes.)

The meat station with marinated chicken bulgolgi (YUMZ!), spicy chicken bulgolgi, pork belly, bacon, marinated pork ribs (great tasting too!), pork collar, beef rib eye, beef short plate (nice), beef short rib and beef bulgolgi. The meat was thinly sliced and easy to cook. Most tasted good, with the exception of the bacon, which was too oily for my liking.

The other side with tiger prawns, squid rings, chicken sausages, shiitake mushrooms, oranges, cherry tomatoes, butter head lettuce and etc veggies. The prawns are really fresh and juicy! It was so good I think I finished about a dozen prawns on my own. OH-DEAR-MY-CHOLESTEROL.

The sauces station, with garlic, chill, kimchi and etc. The meat will taste a lot nicer if you dip it in the bean paste and wrap it with a leaf of lettuce. :)

And their soup stations with Kimchi soup, seaweed soup, rice, sushi, sweet and sour chicken, red bean soup and some really nice tasting shiitake mushroom soup (that was thick, silky, peppery and tinged with a slight sour taste).

They had strawberry, mango, vanilla and black sesame ice cream too!

Here's a close-up of some of the cooked food.

Daessiksin has a rule that all patrons can only eat for 2 hours, to prevent seat hogging (and eating too much of their food, I suppose.)

Despite the huge screwup by MOF that soured an otherwise pleasant meal experience, I'm quite heartened at the effort put in by the staff of Daessiksin to make our meal as comfortable as possible. They were prompt in replacing our BBQ pans once it's dirty, and clearing the plates. The manager also helps clear the plates too! Respect.

Overall, it was a great meal (especially worth it for people who love prawns like me!) if you minus off the MOF blunder.

    1. Hey, I went during lunch as it's normally less crowded during lunch hours. Also, lunch (off-peak) is more value-for-money than dinner. The food variety is still quite decent for lunch, and you can definitely have your pick. I don't think there are any major differences between lunch and dinner. :) Hope this helps!
